Happy Birthday Buddha

After celebrating National friendship day in Singapore, we made it to Chiang Mai, Thailand today. It happens to be the start of a three month national holiday to commemorate Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death day.

Our hotel, Le Meridian, is stunning and we decided to take the kids to the pool to unwind... and so the moms could cool off with a frosty one. To our chagrin, the manager came over to ask us if we wouldn't mind putting our beer in a paper cup because it is a no alcohol holiday....for the next three months! We quickly asked questions to see if that means for visitors and we were relieved to know we can imbibe without issue while here.

We decided to venture out to the old city and visit some temples for the candle ceremony. It was quite beautiful to see the traditions of the monks and locals. We visited Wat Lao Khro temple and then went to the biggest temple inside the old city called Wat Chedi Luang. Here there is the old temple ruins in the background and a newer temple to go inside. There is also a smaller temple only for men, and there were quite a few monks as well. The kids are fascinated with all of the gold, and very good about being respectful of how to behave. Allison makes sure that Uncle Matt takes off his shoes and finds them upon leaving. All five kids have been soaking up the culture and doing well with so much walking!

We found one part of the temple that was for men only. Of course the girls wanted to know what was in there!

We enjoyed our first official Thai meal at Ruen Tamarind. We took a taxi home and everyone is already in bed. We need to get to bed early because Sarah lost a tooth today! Who would have thought the tooth fairy needed to make a stop in Thailand tonight! Happy birthday Buddha!
